A Guide to Becoming a PCC Member or Warden at St Denys

Becoming a member of the PCC or standing as Warden are important opportunities to the support the church by helping to lead it and by being a voice for the rest of the church. We thank you for considering the roles, and we hope the information below will help you understand what is needed.

What Do the Roles Involve?

We've written two roles descriptions to let you know about the time commitment, personal qualities and purpose of the roles. You'll find a link to them below:

  • PCC Member's Role:  The purpose of the PCC member's role is to work as part of a group to lead the mission of the Church, to oversee the wise stewardship of the finances and the building, and to ensure the vulnerable in the church community are protected. To read the full PCC Role Description click here
  • The Warden's Role: The purpose of the Warden's role is to work with the clergy & staff to ensure the day-to-day running of the Parish, and to represent the laity in the management, maintenance and mission of the church. To read the full Warden Role Description click here

Please note that for both roles you will need to complete a DBS check and do foundational safeguarding training through the Church of England that can be done online.

When Do Meetings Happen?

  • PCC meetings happen 6 times a year on the third Tuesday of the months of January, March, May, July, September and November, starting at 7.30 and finishing about 9.15.
  • If you are Warden, you also need to come to the Standing Committee meetings which are on the first Tuesday of the same months at 7.30 till 8pm.
  • If you would like to join the Deanery Synod, you will need to come to the PCC meetings and also attend the four Deanery meetings that happen in the year (often on a Wednesday)

Steps to take if you'd like to be on the PCC:

  1. You need to complete a paper PCC nomination form or Warden nomination for. These are available at church. This includes getting signatures from two people to nominate and second you.
  2. This form needs handing in to the PCC Secretary or Warden (Tim) before the APCM meeting.
  3. At the PCC meeting nominees will be formally voted on to approve members, it rarely is a competitive vote as there are enough vacancies on the PCC for people to join.
  4. Technically a separate meeting is needed to vote for the church wardens, which we do at the start of the APCM.

What happens after you've been voted on:

  • You can have a read of this introductory Guide to the PCC 2026 - click here
  • Maggie or Sera will be in touch to give you a verbal introduction to St Denys PCC before the first meeting, and where you can ask all the questions you have.
  • Sera or Paul will send you through some information on how to sign up for Church Desk (which is where all the paperwork for PCC is stored)
  • Robert will be in touch to ask you to complete a DBS form, if you don't have a current one specifically for St Denys.
  • Robert will be in touch to ask you to complete forms to register with the charity commissioners as a trustee.

Thank you so much for taking time to prayerfully consider the roles. If there's anything you want to ask do chat with Sera, Paul, Maggie or Tim
