Celebrating 10 Years of Friendlies
It was a delight to celebrate a very anniversary of a very special group this week.
'Denys Friendlies' was set up 10 years ago by Antonia in response to seeing a need to offer a space where people who were isolated or struggling with mental health issues could come together and find support and friendship.
Since then, the group has met in the church centre nearly every Monday morning, and has grown to also meet on Thursday mornings too. During Covid, the support and friendship offered had to change to phone conversations, but as soon as possible it returned to meeting in face to face so that friendships and support could flourish.
I've been constantly amazed by the depth of friendship, the kindness and the encouragement found within the group. It's also been a delight to see Antonia grow and flourish at the helm, for she has continued to be the impetus, organisation and leader of the group. (Antonia received an 'Unsung Hero' award from the Bishop of Southampton and Mayor earlier this year)
At the celebration party on Monday I asked a few of group what Friendlies means to them. These are some of the things they said:
- 'You don't need to wear a mask here. You can be yourself and be accepted'
- 'I've just moved to Southampton, and it's here that I found friendship.'
- 'It helps me understand the struggles others are facing.'
- 'We came as strangers, we leave as friends.'
So three cheers from Ten Years of Friendlies (and if you ever want to learn how to play 'Uno' ... these are the folk to ask)
