Rev'd Sera Rumble to be Collated as Vicar of St Denys Church, 11.30am Tuesday 26th May
On Tuesday 26th May Sera will become Vicar of St Denys. This statement might mystify you, as you possibly think she is already vicar!
For the last few years, Sera has been leading St Denys as our 'Priest-in-Charge', but next Tuesday in the 'Collation', she will take oaths and make declarations in front of the Bishop and church, and will then be legally installed as 'Vicar'.
What's the difference between a vicar and a priest-in-charge? In some ways, things won't be very different, the day to day work remains the same. The only difference is that a priest-in-charge has slightly less freedom to act as they please, not holding the freehold of the parish, and – unlike rectors and vicars – they work on a time-limited contract basis for the diocesan bishop. Whereas the Priest-in-Charge post was for a short time, the post of Vicar is permanent, long-term appointment.
The service acknowledges how the vicar works with others in parish ministry:
The Bishop reads the Deed of Collation and then gives it Sera saying: Sera receive this Cure of Souls which is both mine and yours;
The Area Dean and Churchwardens lead Sera to the church door. The Area Dean lays his hand on the door handle, and says: By the authority of the Bishop, I, Simon Robertson, Area Dean of Southampton, induct you, Sarah Victoria Rumble into the real and actual possession of the church of Southampton St Denys with all the rights and responsibilities belonging to them.
The Churchwarden presents the keys of the church to Sera saying: Sera, receive these keys in token of the responsibility which we share; and may the Lord preserve your going out and your coming in, now and always.
So this Collation is a small but big thing! It marks a continuing journey but also a new chapter, for Sera and for St Denys. At the heart of it, there is much to be thankful to God for.
If you'd like to come along, you'll be very welcome, it's open to everyone. You will be add your voice when the Bishop asks: 'People of God, is it your will that Sera should continue to serve with you in this parish? Will you support and uphold her in this ministry?
The Service starts at 11.30am in the main church and will be about 20 minutes long, with refreshments served afterwards.
And if you can't come along, do listen out for the bell ringing at about 11.45... a sign of the new chapter beginning.
