2 Recommended Lent Books to Shape Our Imagination and Habits
We're excited to recommend two books for Lent that we think will help shape our imagination and our habits. Choose which one most appeals to you, and get a copy from St Denys Church. Whether you regularly come along to church or have never stepped foot in the building, if these books interest you... then order one and we''ll get it to you.
Book 1: 'Wardrobes and Rings: through the Lenten Lands with the Inklings' by Julia Golding, Malcolm Guite and Simon Horrobin
We're recommending the Lent book 'Wardrobes and Rings' which invites us to rediscover through Lent through imagination-infused faith. It combines the insight and imagination of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and the other Oxford Inklings with a Bible passage and reflection question. This Lent devotional offer daily readings and reflections that illuminate the way to the cross and resurrection through themes such as temptation, time, nature and creativity.
How to get a copy: You can get a discounted copy from church, you choose whether you pay £5 or £10. Either ordering using this 2026 Lent Book Form and we'll have one waiting for you at church, or simply collect and pay for one after a Sunday service. We'll get you your book by Wednesday February 18th (Ash Wednesday).
You also join a Lent Book Group: Consider also joining a Lent Book Group and use the notes we provide to discuss and reflect together on what you've read in Wardrobes and Rings. (Feel free not to join a group and simply read and reflect at home). If you'd be interested in joining a group, click here for the 2026 Lent Book Form.
Alternatively if you're in a Small Group, you could read sections of the Book together and use our Notes during Lent.

Book(let) 2: 'Draw Near: Life-giving Habits for Lent' - the official Church of England resource for Lent, with adult versions and kids and families versions available
The booklet for adults invites you to develop a rhythm of life that will help you grow as a disciple of Christ. Each week explores an activity central to Christian discipleship: worship, prayer, Scripture, communion, service to others and sharing the good news. For each day of Lent it offers Bible readings, short reflections, prayers and practical responses.
The booklet for children encourages younger readers to build a habit of generosity with the help of 40acts. Rather than giving something up for Lent, it invites you to give away things, time and encouragement, discovering the joy of generosity. Each day offers a simple Bible verse, reflection, prayer and age-appropriate generous act.
You can pick up a 'Draw Near' booklet at church, while stocks last. We suggest a £2 donation for the Adult booklet, and the Children's Version is totally free.
