Where have you found a sense of joy?
Where have you found a sense of joy?
# Friday Reflection

Where have you found a sense of joy?
Over the last week, I have had two very different experiences of the joy of water.
The first was while staying next to a lake. Early in the morning, before most people were up (apart from a few reluctant-looking dog walkers!), I was able to take the paddleboard out. The lake was so still, and the world so quiet, that I experienced a deep sense of joy.
The second was visiting Manor Farm Country Park on bank holiday Monday-an environment far from peace and quiet. The river was alive with people laughing, splashing, and enjoying the water. You couldn't help but smile as you shared in their joy.
Looking at the photos some of you have sent in, it's clear that one of the wonders of water is the joy it brings.
I have always loved the imagery in Ezekiel 47, where water flows from the temple into the desert, bringing life. Jesus picks up this imagery in John 7:37-39, saying, "Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water" (NRSV). John explains that this is about the Holy Spirit, flowing like water from our hearts.
Just as physical water brings joy and refreshment, may the Holy Spirit flowing from us bring joy to others-life even to desert places. Perhaps that's a message we especially need to hear right now.
So, over the last week, where have you found a sense of joy? Maybe in your garden, in a quiet walk, or even splashing in a river. Take a moment to thank God for that time. If you found that difficult, how might you be able to seek moments of Joy in the week ahead?
If you have the opportunity, try reading Ezekiel 47 and imagine yourself in the story. What stands out to you? What do you notice? What might God be saying to you through it?
May you notice moments of joy in the coming week.
Blessings,
Paul and the St Denys team.
